Parcel lockers vs. home delivery: a model to compare last-mile delivery cost in urban and rural areas

Purpose This paper investigates the economic performances of two business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce last-mile delivery options –parcel lockers (PLs) and traditional home (HD) in contexts where is still at its early stages. It analyses compares different implementation contexts, urban rural areas. Design/methodology/approach study develops an analytical model that estimates costs for both PL HD options. The applied to base cases (representative areas Italy), sensitivity are subsequently performed on a set key variables/parameters (i.e. density, fill rate annual costs). To support development application, interviews with practitioners (Edwards et al. , 2011) were performed. Findings PLs imply lower cost than HD, independently from area (urban or rural): advantages mainly derive higher density drastic reduction failed deliveries. Benefits entailed by more significant due investments costs, as well costs. Originality/value offers insights academics practitioners. On academic side, it compare which includes analysis contexts. could serve platform developing/informing future analytical/optimisation contributions. managerial may making decisions about benchmark their identify main variables parameters play.
